Can maths help you sleep?

I’ve never really thought that sleep had much to do with maths but some researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the United States are using maths to find out more about the cycles of sleep.

Early Verdict on the Ergo Flex Memory Foam Mattress

The mattress arrived as promised yesterday while I was at work so I rushed home to see what it was like. It arrived packed in to a box so my wife had taken it upstairs and opened the box so it could expand to it’s normal size which it ad done by the time I got home. There was a bit of a smell at first apparently but that is normal according to other reviews I’ve read and had more or less gone by the evening.

The first night on the new mattress was a bit strange at first as it was so different to our old one (a fairly old standard spring set up) but I soon got used to it. It was very comfortable and the support offered was much better than the old mattress.

I’ll see what it’s like after a couple of weeks of use but so far I am very pleased with it. There were so many different types and costs of mattress out there that choosing just one was quite difficult but I think I’ve made a good choice with the Ergo Flex.

Memory Foam Mattresses

While out shopping at the weekend I decided to have a look at some memory foam mattresses. These are mattresses made from visco-elastic PU foam which is made from billions of spherical shaped open cells apparently. The foam reacts to body temperature and weight to mould itself to your contours and provide support where it’s needed most.

I found the thought of a mattress that moulds to your body quite appealing so I did a bit of investigation. While I was in town with my wife we tried a couple out in some bed shops and were pleasantly surprised with how comfy they were. The price range was quite bit so but she was quite keen so after an evening of internet research and price comparison we decided to put in an order at www.ergoflex.co.uk for their king size memory foam mattress. The price seemed reasonable and there seemed to be plenty of good reviews online.

It should be arriving tomorrow so I’ll see how it turns out then!

Putting the clocks forward makes you sleepy

I was thinking about the clocks going forward (on the 29th March if you don’t know) and came across an article about a study that had been done. The unsurprising conclusion was that loosing an hour made people more sleepy – not the biggest revelation ever.

As I’ve been looking for a new mattress the amount of time spent in bed has been on my mind! This did make me think about the history of the time change. The National Maritime Museum have quite an interesting article on the history of the change to BST

Getting a better nights sleep

Over on the WebWorkerDaily they have published an interesting article with some tips about how to get a better nights sleep. The log and short of it seems to be a good routine and avoiding caffeine and alcohol.

Pocket Spring Mattresses

Pocket spring mattresses are similar to the open spring kind but each spring is in it’s own pocket which is not a big surprise given the name. As all the springs are separate that react to weight individually. This is apparently particularly noticeable if your partner is a different weight to you as their weight doesn’t cause the rest of the mattress to sag towards them.

There seem to be endless places to buy pocket spring mattresses from, varying in price a great deal so more research is needed on these I think!

Open Spring Mattresses

After having a bit of a look around various places it seems that the most common type of mattress is the open spring mattress. It basically has springs inside which give the support and is upholstered to make if comfortable.

There is a good little video on the John Lewis web site showing a mattress being created by hand although I think this is a Pocket Spring mattress not an open one.

Different types of mattress

How do you decide what type of mattress to buy? I’ve been wondering the same thing recently as my current mattress is in need of replacement. I’m was thinking of going for memory foam but thought I’d check out all the other options first, just to be sure.

I thought I’d share all my research with the world to save you time if you are doing the same.

So what types of mattress are available. Types I’ve come across so far include

Open spring mattress
Pocket spring mattress
Visco-elastic mattress (Memory Foam)
Latex mattress

Once I’ve found out more about each type I’ll report back on my findings.
